The Waiter	Get the  tea ready for Moaalem Hussain.
	
The policeman	( Enters looking both ways ) Hey, boy, Samir.
( Calling for the waiter )
	
The waiter	Yes. At your service. Would you like to have tea, coffee  or lemonade ?
	
The policeman 	No tea, no coffee, no lemonade. I want Sinbad.
	
The waiter	He hasn't shown up yet. He will soon be here.	
The policeman	When he gets here' tell him to go and see  the chief
of  the police. Goodbye.	
The waiter	All right
. Would not you stay for a while ?	
The policeman	I have lots of work.	
Sonkor	( Stands and makes for the waiter ) Well , what happened ?	
The waiter	The police wants Sinbad .	
Sonkor 	Oh, Sinbad . His troubles are all over the country.
All his life he has been a generous and decent boy.
Allah will have his way with those sinners.
( Moaalem = Egyptian word for master or boss )	
Shaker	( Playing cards with Shokair ) A knight .( Taking the cards ) wipes out another .	
Shokair	No, this is a queen .Show me the card .	
Shaker	 ( Gripping his hand ) You don't trust my words ?	
Shokair	 Show me the card I'm telling you .	
Shaker	 No, I wont .	
Shokair	 ( Holding the card and turning it by force ) This is a
queen,  you cheater .
	
Shaker	Me …cheater . Take this , then . ( He hits him . A fight arises )	
Sonkor	Sit down boys . Shame on you. It's a real shame , boys .	
The waiter	Help, you people , help .
( There is a loud whistle . Enters Sinbad and two others )	
All	Sinbad ?	
Sinbad	What's going on here ? What is the matter with you ?
Who's making all this noise in the café ?	
Sonkor	 Thank Allah you are here Sinbad .	
Sinbad	 What happened ?	
Shaker	He insulted me and called me cheater .	
Shokair	 Look  at this . Is it a queen or a knight ? You tell me

All	Tell us Sinbad…….queen or knight ?

 ( Everybody laughs )	
Sonkor	Both of you are wrong , then . It's a King .	
The waiter	Sit down everyone .	
Sinbad	Everybody gets back to their seats .We don't want any fuss in the café .
 ( Sinbad sits at Shaker's and Shokair's table and deals cards ) A card for you , a card for him and this is mine.
( He takes one for himself ) Knight. ( Sinbad collects cards before he deals another round ) Knight. ( He collects cards,deals once more and collects cards )	
Shaker	Wait .( Taking hold of his hand ) I've got a knight .
( He presents a card )	
Shokair	I've got one  ,too .( Presenting his own card )
This is no king . It's a knight . ( He holds Shaker's card )	
 Sinbad	 It's a queen  . You two play together .Give us some orange juice , Samir .
( They play in fear .)	
The waiter	 ( Whispering to Sinbad )The debt is getting heavier and you haven't paid for a while now .	
Sinbad	What's the meaning of this ? You are not giving me orange juice ?	
Sonkor	 ( Feeling ashamed ) I'll buy you orange juice ,Sinbad.
But the account has largely increased . I'm a poor man and the café is having difficulties.	
Sinbad	( Jumps to his feet angrily ) I spent all my money on my friends at your café  .What are you talking about ?	
The waiter	 Sinbad . The chief of police sent a soldier to ask about you .

Child	Hurry up ,Sinbad .The police are looking for you ,Sinbad .They are looking for you .	
All	Run, Sinbad .	
Sinbad	They are looking for me . Should I run away ?	
Child	 The Caller is calling your name all over the city and the police is on the way .	
Caller's Voice	Country people! By judge Gehad's order ,Sinbad is under arrest .Merchants owe him a thousand Dinars
so far .The judge saw it best to put him under arrest immediately .	
Sonkor 	Run, Sinbad .	
The waiter	Run, Sinbad .	
Shaker	Run, Sinbad .

Everyone	Run, Sinbad .	
Sinbad	Where to ? Could anyone leave his own country ? 
Everyone sees his country as the most beautiful…and how can Sinbad  run away from the most beloved houses, people , market place flakes, the salesmen , the
cart drivers  and all the land . I must see my mother .I have to go see her .Come with me Shaker .Come with me , Shokair to see my mother before they arrest me .
Hide me boys .
( Flash light for the run away as the police arrives .Curtain .)
                SCENE  .II.
TIME : The Arabian Nights' Time .
PLACE : Baghdad .
 ( Curtains open on an ancient Baghdad house . Baghdad alley . There is a gas lamp hanging above the door , a window on the right side of the door and another window above . On the right , stands the house
of the maiden Kohel El Oyoon ( Apple of The Eye )
Sinbad's house is on the left . )
 (There is a singing and dancing group who point at Sinbad's house .
 GROUP : This is the lovers' house . This is the friends' house . It is Sinbad's house .
( Enter the market place people along with the police.
Everyone is shouting " Sinbad is under arrest "
The butcher sings :  " I owe him two hundred Dinars for mutton and beef "
The grocer sings : " He owes me two more for wheat and beans "
Another man sings : "He took three hundred worth of perfumes and scents "	
The policeman	 Sinbad is under arrest .His debts travel east and west .He is wanted at all cost 
  ( There is a sign saying " Please come tomorrow ")
(At the end of the show actors and actresses fill the stage. Ordinary alley walkers, a woman with tray on her head. A water man carrying a leather sack on his back , a traveling salesman and children running from right to left .Enters Olwan , the sheep merchant .) .	
Olwan	The shop is closed . Where's Sinbad 
( He looks up at the house and knocks at the door .)
Where's Sinbad ? Sinbad .Sinbad .  


	
Sinbad's Mother	Who's calling for Sinbad ?( She opens the window )
Olwan. What do you want ?	
Olwan	What do I want ? I want my money  Where is my money ? I want what is mine  Your son owes me three hundred Dinars for three lambs.	
Sinbad's Mother	So what ? It is not the end of the world , Olwan .Or is it the end of the world ?	
Olwan	It is not the end of the world but I am not the Shahbander . I don't have heaps and heaps of money to throw right and left to be bankrupt and ruin my house .Am I to go out begging , Sinbad's mother ?	
Sinbad's Mother	Fancy you becoming a merchant with a real voice to come to Sinbad's house to claim your debts . Where are the old times ? May Allah have mercy on Sinbad's father's soul .	
Olwan	May Allah have mercy on both the living and the dead .Listen .I'm out of patience . Where's your son ? Whenever I come, I find the shop closed and the doors locked. I'll inform the judge and the police against him.	
Sinbad's Mother	Is that so , Olwan ?You are that simply suing Sinbad ?	
Olwan	If my father got out of  his grave and asked me not to sue him , I'd sue him anyway .Business is cleverness and rightfulness. Business does not know the beggar or the poor man .	
Sinbad's Mother	Go and sue him ,then .Our Lord will punish the strong and the merciless .	
Olwan	 I am suing him whether you prayed or not .I want my money . ( Exits )	
Sinbad's Mother	 ( Standing ) Allah will have his way with the son of my womb for allowing the worthy and the unworthy to rejoice in our misery .
 ( Enters Karawan , the grape merchant along with a policeman .) 	
Karawan	 This is Sinbad's house ( Pointing at  the house ) and this is his mother .	
The policeman	 You Sinbad's mother ?	
Sinbad's Mother	Yes .	
The policeman	Where is your son ,woman ?	
Sinbad's Mother	I know nothing more than you .He went out last night and did not come back .	
The policeman	And why didn't he come back ?	
Sinbad's Mother	I swear to Allah I don't know , my son .	
Karawan	Well ,well .Have you seen that wicked woman ?
( To the policeman ) 	
Sinbad's Mother	Don't unleash your tongue , Karawan .Am I a wicked woman ?	
Karawan	You must be hiding your son inside .	
Sinbad's Mother	Am I lying , Karawan ?	
Karawan	Am I lying , then ?	
Sinbad's Mother          	Yes .My son went out two nights ago and I don't know where he is .	
Karawan	Your son is under arrest .	
Sinbad's Mother	Under arrest..! Why ? For what reason, Allah forbids ?.	
Karawan	I owe him a hundred Dinars worth of grape juice .	
Sinbad's Mother	Is that true ,Policeman ?	
The policeman	It is . By Allah it is true. Sinbad is under arrest . 	
Karawan	 You have got to tell us where he is or else we will arrest you instead .	
Sinbad's Mother	Why me ? Did I steal anything ?	
The policeman	The debtors are giving us trouble and the judge said 
arrest the mother till Sinbad shows up.	
Sinbad's Mother 	Oh, people. Help me , help.( Shouting and yelling ) The judge ordered to have me arrested instead of Sinbad .	
Man	What happened ?	
Man	They say they will arrest Sinbad's mother .	
Man	Does that make any sense ?	
The policeman	It is an important matter and the judge's order is unanswerable .	
Sinbad's Mother	Help me , people .Save me 
( People gather .The policeman drags Sinbad's mother away as she weeps ).	
Sinbad's Mother	 Once upon a time Sinbad was the naughtiest boy in the country ; mine and his father's only son . One day ,
his father died. He went out with bad friends , playing and reveling with them and closed the shop .Debts increased and he , poor boy , had to stay one night at home and two on the run. Alas for times .Where are Sinbad's father's days ? Wealth was in our hands and people were all around us .Alley people , please pay my debts .	
Man	We can't find our daily bread .	
Man	Each has enough problems of his own .	
Man	We eat one meal and skip the next .
( Exit people . Kohel El Oyoon rushes in .She is a pretty girl  of twenty )	
Kohel	( Pushing people ) Make a little way . Get out of the way .What's wrong with you aunt ? What happened ?	
Sinbad's Mother	Help me, my daughter .They want to arrest me in place of Sinbad .	
Kohel	Why should they arrest you ?	
Sinbad's Mother	Sinbad is wanted by the law , Kohel El Oyoon .	
Karawan	( Flirting with her ) Allah !Your name is Kohel El Oyoon and you have the most beautiful eyes .Whose daughter are you so that I could propose to you ?	
Kohel	You are as old as my father and I am engaged to Sinbad .	
Karawan	This Sinbad is a thief .He is wanted by the law and all the merchants owe him a thousand Dinars .	
Sinbad's Mother	What a pity my son !	
Kohel	Here . Take my gold. A necklace, earrings and two bracelets	
Karawan	What use is this ?	
The policeman	There are many debts .	
Kohel	I'd give my soul for him .	
The policeman 	We want people's money .	
Karawan	Marry me , good girl, and I'll pay his debts for him. What do you say Kohel El Oyoon ?	
Sinbad's Mother	No, Kohel El Oyoon .	
Kohel	I love Sinbad . Lovers must make sacrifices .

Sinbad's Mother	This is no sacrifice .	
Karawan	Do sacrifice . Sacrifice and marry me, Kohel El Oyoon .and I will pay his debts for him	
The policeman	Where's Sinbad , Sinbad's mother ? Lest we will take

Sinbad's Voice	( Talking within the box ) Mother, I came back .	
Kohel	It's Sinbad's voice .	
Shaker	Not so loud .Are you Sinbad's mother ?	
Shokair	How could she be his mother you idiot ?
This is his sister .She is young and beautiful .	
Shaker	Where's Sinbad's mother ?	
Kohel	What do you want from her ?	
Shokair	We brought her a present .	
Kohel	What present ?	
Shaker and Shokair	The box .	
Kohel	And what is in the box ?	
Shaker	Is it any of your business ? Are you Sinbad's mother ? Sinbad said that box is to be delivered to my mother at the house .	
Shokair	And we are just in front of the door .Open the house and we will tell you .	
Shaker	You are Sinbad's mother or sister ?	
Kohel	Neither his mother nor his sister .	
Sinbad's Voice	She's my fiancee .	
Shokair	( Leaning on the box ) What are you saying ?	
Sinbad's Voice	Stand straight you fool or else someone will see you .	
Shokair	( Straightening ) Where's Sinbad's mother ?	
Kohel	In prison .The police is looking for Sinbad and when they didn't find him they took her away .	
Shaker	Police looking for him ! Run boy .( They run out of sight while the box remains on stage with Kohel El Oyoon .)	
Kohel	I wonder what's in that box ?	
Sinbad's Voice	Open the box , Kohel El Oyoon .	
Kohel 	This is Sinbad's voice .	
Sinbad	Open at once .	
Kohel	All right ( She opens . Sinbad gets out with dust and smoke ) Sinbad !! You inside the box  while they arrest your mother .	
Sinbad	How could they arrest my mother ?	
Kohel	They filed many complaints to the judge against you .They owe you a thousand Dinars which your mother could not pay .The judge gave an order to have you arrested .Your friends had sold you anfd your mother is in prison right now .	
Sinbad	 Oh, my friends who betrayed me ; I who used to possess heaps and heaps of money ; I who slaughtered
animals every day , held banquets and invited the rich and the poor .My money is lost on account of my friends and now they complain to the judge against me .	
Kohel 	You had wasted your mother's and father's money on parties and friends' get- together .	
Sinbad	My friends deceived and betrayed me .Most of all : Karawan ; that villain .	
Kohel	Karawan wants to marry me in order to pay off your debts .So he told me in front of your mother .	
Kohel	Karawan, Shaaban, Salman or Erfan…all of your companions.None of your friends proved to be good and faithful . 	
Sinbad	I must do something .Yes , do something . I must sell the house , the shop.  Yes , I have to sell the house, the shop and the furniture.	
Kohel	How much is it all worth ? A hundred ? Two hundred ?
Dinars ?They owe you a thousand .	
Sinbad	What's to be done ? What's the solution ? The prison is right ahead . I must get my mother out of prison .	
Kohel	If you give your self up , the'll put you in prison for five years but your mother will be released after three days if you don't show up.	
Sinbad	Where should I hide , then ?Where could I go ?	
Kohel	Hide anywhere. Listen. I have an idea. Get back into the box and lie down. I'll get two porters and send you off to the harbour. There, you could sleep by the sea for there are no watchmen and a few soldietrs. 	
Sinbad	By Allah, it's a good idea.I'll lie down in the box and you go call Shaker and Shokair. In the morning you come to see me till Generous Allah helps us through .	
Kohel	 Porter. Porter.	
Shaker	( Enters ) You need a porter to carry the box.	
Kohel	Yes . I want two porters.	
Shaker	 ( Shouting ) Shokair. My brother . Come with me .	
Shokair	How strange ! Aren't you Sinbad's mother ?	
Kohel	 No, I'm not Sinbad's mother.	
Shokair	Isn't that Sinbad's box ?	
Shaker	No, that's a box exactly like  Sinbad's .	
Sinbad's Voice	Lift it up, boys.	
Shokair 	Whose voice is this ?	
Sinbad	I am your mother. I mean your father. Carry the box , you and your brother , Shokair .	
Shaker and Shokair	All right	
Kohel	Let's go to the harbor.	
	( Lights fade gradually as the scene changes )	
	                         SCENE .III.	
	 (The scene changes as the harbor seamen dance and sing a three minutes song to the sea and the waves .Far into the sea there is a ship. On the docks workers come and go.Enter Shaker and Shokair , the box and Kohel El Oyoon .Shaker and Shokair look very exhausted )	
Shaker	We are very tired.	
Kohel	 Leave the box.	
	 ( They drop it )	
Sinbad	Watch out , stupid .	
Shaker	Is the box talking ?	
Shokair	 I know this voice .	
Kohel	No , no . You don't know it .You only think you know it. Could there ever be a talking box ?Here's half a Dinar for each of you .Goodbye.	
	( They leave as Bac Bac  , the Captain of the ship enters )	
Bac Bac	What is it  , sweety ? You want to travel ?	
Kohel	( Gets nervous )Me ? No .	
Bac	You want to send this box to a lover or a friend , then ?	
Kohel	The box ! Yes .I am not sending it to anyone .	
Bac	 What's inside the box , then ?	
Kohel	 What business is it of yours ? What do you want with the box ?The box contains stuff .	
Bac	What do I want ?! Nothing .I want to help you	
Kohel	Who are you ? What is your name ?	
Bac 	( Laughs ) You don't know me  I am Bac Bac.	
Kohel	And who is Bac Bac ? ( Imitating him )	
Bac	Bac Bac is the greatest Captain ;Master of the prettiest ship.I have sailed all the waters of the world from east to west. I am the one who can catch the whale in the deep bottom of the sea .
 	
Kohel	Excuse me , Bac Bac .	
Bac	Where to with Allah's speed ?	
Kohel	I didn't come to chat with you .I have work to do.	
Bac	Why did you come ? There's something you're hiding in your eyes. Why did you come ?	
Kohel	I came to sell women clothes and presents to a merchant called Erfan. Do you know him ?	
Bac	 Of course  , I know him .Isn't he tall, with broad shoulders and a heavy mustache ?	
Kohel	( To herself ) You liar .There's nobody called Erfan .	
Bac	I know him . He said he'd pass by in the morning .As soon as he comes, I'll give him the box .	
Kohel	No , not until I collect the money for the box .	
Bac	At what hour will you pass by ?	
Kohel	I will come to you in the morning .Goodbye , Bac Bac. The box is in your charge . ( She walks away and disappears .)	
Bac	 Goodbye. Don't you fear a thing . The box is under my constant watch .( Revealing his mean face )This box contains secrets, presents and news. There are perfumes and scents .I will take the box. Carry it to the deck and give it to my wife as a gift . And when the girl comes back in the morning , I'll tell her it had been stolen .The thieves had stolen it .Tammam! Hammam ! You boys .	
	( Enter Tammam and Hammam who are really Shaker and Shokair in disguise )	
Hammam	At your service ,Captain , sir .	
Tammam	At your service ,Master of all men .	
Bac	Take this box away .Carry it .	
Sinbad's Voice	Don't you dare carry the box , you fools .	
Tammam	Whatever you say , sir .	
Hammam	Yes .	
Bac	Why , in heavens , didn't you carry the box ?	
Hammam 	Didn't you say don't carry the box ?	
Bac	I didn't say a word . Carry the box immediately .
( He turns away . They move to carry the box )	
Sinbad's Voice	Don't carry the box .I'm warning you .Leave the box alone you idiots .
( The situation is repeated )	
Tammam	Carry it or don't carry it ?	
Hammam	You tell us , Captain .	
Bac	The box is to be carried at once .	
	                SCENE  .IV.	
	( Light spot .Back to the alley and Sinbad's house .Enters Kohel El Oyoon to find Sinbad's mother on the floor ,crying )	
Kohel	Are you here , aunt ?	
Sinbad's Mother	A kind-hearted merchant  came and guaranteed me in court .He asked the judge what is your problem with Sinbad's mother .Sinbad is a man but what guilt the lady bears. Oh my son! Chased by time and people. I wonder where are you now ? 	
Kohel	Have no fear ,aunt .I got every  thing under control. Have no fear because Sinbad is safe .I hid him in a box and left him at the harbor far from the eyes of watchmen, soldiers and spies.	
Sinbad's Mother	What do you mean you hid him in a box ? He'll suffocate and die .	
Kohel	Don't you worry .The box has holes on each side so as to let air in and out .Is it reasonable , aunt , that I should leave Sinbad in a box to die ? He can breathe and live .	
Sinbad's Mother 	When do I see my son ?	
Kohel	 It is brighter and safer in the morning .
( Enters Karawan )	
Karawan	 Good evening .	
Kohel 	No evening and no good will ever come your ways .	
Karawan	( Pretending sadness and grief ) By Allah I am ashamed of myself ,Sinbad's mother .My conscience hurts .How could I ever imprison you instead of Sinbad ?May Allah punish those who were responsible and set me against you .Let me kiss your hand Sinbad's mother ….my mother .I kiss your hand , too , Kohel El Oyoon .	
Kohel	Get away from me , mean man . Go away .	
Karawan	I'm ready to pay off all Sinbad's debts .( Whispering to Kohel ) Just say yes .( Then , to Sinbad's mother ) Make her understand that your son is a no good failure; that she must see what is good for her .If you really love her , tell her that your son wasted his father's money and became poor ….penniless.	
Sinbad's Mother	And you are the cause of all this , Karawan .	
Karawan	 Cause of what ? Did I force his hand ?Did I put my hand into his pocket and spent the money ?	
Kohel	You got him together with the bad bunch….the worthless friends you introduced him to until he spent every penny .Now , people  owe him and the police is looking for him .	
Karawan	I didn't do this .You are my family and I am your son .	
Sinbad's Mother	Keep away from us .Leave or I will scream and get all the people .Oh what a calamity ! What a catastrophe !Help us , you people. Help us !	
Kohel	Karawan came attacking us in the middle of the night .	
Man	You should be ashamed of yourself attacking ladies !	
Man	Impolite man	
Man	Ill-mannered man .
( They attack him )  ( Gradual darkness as the scene changes )

	  (The Captain's room .The Captain enters his office followed by two seamen. Inside the room , the Captain's wife appears in her full splendor .)	
Kamar El Zamn	You are finally here?	
Bac	I brought you a big box full of presents from Baghdad, dear love.	
Kamar	Is this true , Bac , my love ?	
Bac	It is true , Kamar El Zaman , my love .	
Kamar	Open the box .	
Bac	Wait till I take my clothes off .( He tries to take his clothes off )	
Sinbad	( From within ) Don't you dare take your clothes off .	
Bac	All right . I won't take them off .	
Kamar	Will you sleep with your clothes on ? You've got to take them off .	
Bac 	All right ,Madame . 	
Sinbad	Didn't I tell you not to take your clothes off ?	
Bac 	I shall not take them off .	
Kamar	What do you mean ?	
Bac	 I'll eat a bite with you first because I am hungry .	
Kamar	Sit down and eat .	
Sinbad	 Shouldn't you wash your hands first , man ?  Stand up .( He shouts at him ) Get on your feet

Bac 	 To wash my hands as you had just told me .	
Kamar	You must be either drunk or crazy .	
Bac	 ( Sitting opposite her ) Here I sit .	
Sinbad	You coward .Aren't you brave enough to go and wash your hands ?	
Bac 	( To Kamar )Am I a coward Kamar El Zaman ?Are you insulting me ?	
Kamar	Did I insult or even talked to you ?	
Bac	Yes , you did .And I heard your voice with my own ears .	
Kamar	No . You must be out of your mind  .	
Bac 	Insulting me again ? I cannot sleep in the cabin tonight .( Exits )

t ( Exits from the room  and Sinbad emerges from the box )	
Sinbad	Oh my arm ! Oh my shoulder ! Why did I ever lie down  in the box and who brought me here ?And where is this ship going ? It is good they had left me  all alone with the bed to sleep and rest till morning .( He goes to the bed. Enters Captain Bac holding a candle  in his hand .)	
Bac	She is asleep .Sad for my sake .Kamar ..Kamar..my life ( Takes hold of Sinbad's foot on the bed ) Forgive me . I was mistaken .	
Sinbad	( Extinguishing the candle and yelling ) What a  !scandal !( From under the sheet )
